The Veder Method - On stage of the memory
Theatre Veder works from the Veder Method. This innovative method is first of all aimed at elderly people with memory deficits. A person’s memories are part of his or her identity. Memory loss deprives a person of the comforting feeling ‘this is me’.
The long-term memory stays intact the longest. Theatre Veder appeals to this by going back in time to the era where the elderly were young, using theatre, singing and poetry. Reminiscence – the recalling of memories – with the aid of attributes of the old days, pictures, songs and games triggers recognition and with that acknowledgement of who the person was and still is. This acknowledgement summons a feeling of safety. The elderly experience for a while their own identity. The opportunity for better communication in the here and now grows out of this experience.
The Veder Method is transferred through training and coaching on the job to health care professionals, volunteers and family members so they can better reach the world of emotions and experiences of the elderly. This enhances reciprocal contact and thus not only the welfare of the elderly, but also of the people taking care of the elderly.
